Healing By Sharing – A Trip Through Kenya
„Healing By Sharing – A Trip Through Kenya“ (Germany / Kenya / Tanzania 2013 , 93 min, documentary film about various NGOs in East Africa.)
Synopsis:
„Healing by Sharing – A Trip Trough Kenya“ is about various individuals, who work relentlessly in their surroundings in the centre of Africa to improve the lives of their fellow citizens. Having come to terms with the sexual abuse by his father in his last film, Michael Stock moves, inspired by his friend Carsten Cierocki, away from his own problems and looks at those facing the world in his new documentary. Carsten‘s vision – we are all God and therefore Creators of this world – inspired the pair along with Fabian Michailova to make a trip to Kenya. There they meet all those people who dedicate themselves to working for others, often with little means. Through their work they are setting an example for others and making a difference in society. First they get to know Jimmy, who is living a double life as a gay man in Kenya due to the deep-rooted homophobia and the existing laws there. This, however, does not prevent him from talking openly about this issue. He participates in a study at the „KEMRI“ – Clinic, which is carrying out research on HIV vaccine. They travel through Kenya with Jimmy, going first to the Mpala Mobile Clinic in the Northwestern District in Laikipia. With the help of several assistants, a nurse treats the bush dwellers of different tribes in the poorest areas, carries out family planning and provides information on HIV and AIDS. You can also use other medicines which positively impact on society. The Sarakasi Trust in Nairobi uses art as a means of giving talented Kenyans hope in life. Acrobats, dancers and musicians gather at the Sarakasi Dome, a rehearsal and meeting room. Almost all the acrobats come from the slums such as the coach James Nafsi and Chris Olwenyi with whom they visit the second largest slum in Africa, Kibera. They are surprised to see the many self-initiated projects. The „Fruitful Women“ take care of the many orphans in Kibera and in the „think tank“,the group „Ghetto Wasanii“ talk about and plan how they can best organise their upcoming performances in order to keep their fellow countrymen away from weapons and educate them about sexual violence. Other young people such as Daniel and his band „Hope Raisers“ from the music family Vocal, „Voices of change all over“, have a clear idea of how they will reach out to the youth in Kenya to prevent violence and maintain peace. The situation took a serious turn for the worse after the so-called „post- election violence“, a wave of violence that rocked Kenya after the recent elections, and which was extremely noticeable in the slums. Reverend Michael Kimindu, the godfather of the homosexual movement in Kenya, however, talks about integrating homosexuals into society at his masses. questioning the fanatical attitude of existing religions in the process. This film shows that a person, even in the poorest areas of the world, must not lose hope for a better future, and instead is capable of experiencing joy in life and creating something wonderful out of nothing.
